We met Jake while visiting my sister. Jake, a white lab had been orphaned and needed a home. Neil and I had been watching Downton Abby and the opening of every show had the beautiful white lab walking with his master. I had been dreaming of getting a dog and having a companion when I went up to work at a summer camp each July. On our way home that evening, I shared with Neil that this could be our perfect dog. Well, unfortunately Neil was pretty resistant. We had been going through some tough times in our marriage and he was just not ready to add a dog into all that. I was disappointed and may have been a bit (or a lot) frustrated on the inside. “The perfect dog, Neil”
A couple of days later Neil and I were out taking a walk around the neighborhood. He shared that he had talked to my sister about Jake. Mother’s Day was coming up and Jake might be the perfect gift. Unfortunately, a home had already been found for him in those few days. But there was a 5 month old puppy available from Pueblo. My sister sent a text with a video of this puppy walking along side of the trainer on a heel. Pretty amazing since she was only 5 months old and our dogs in the past had always taken us for the walks.
A couple days later we traveled down to Colorado Springs to meet this puppy. We were sitting inside of my sister’s offices, when she came barreling in with all kinds of puppy excitement. Her whole body moved when she wagged her tail. She had red hair! It was love at first sight. Her name was Annie and she was no longer Little Orphan Annie.
We soon learned that Annie had all kinds of feelings and all kinds of ways of letting us know about them. She was kindhearted, loyal beyond measure, playful, mischievous, goofy and Trouble! When she did get into trouble it was a fast trip into our good graces with those warm brown eyes and her desire to please. Most of all Annie was a people lover.
4 and 1/2 years later she still loves all the people but especially us. God knew exactly what we needed and that Jake wasn’t the dog for us.
We have since gone on to get two more Goldens, from the same breeder that Annie originally came from. But those stories are for another time….
